PNG transparent background — How does it work?

Transparent PNGs use a 32-bit RGBA color mode where the fourth channel (alpha) controls opacity — 0 is fully transparent, 255 is fully opaque. This lets logos, icons, and UI elements overlay any background seamlessly. PNG 8-bit vs 24-bit — What is the difference?

8-bit PNG uses a palette of up to 256 colors (indexed color) — ideal for simple graphics, icons, and diagrams with small file sizes. 24-bit PNG stores full RGB (16.7 million colors) — needed for photographs and complex gradients. 32-bit RGBA adds transparency to 24-bit. What is APNG (Animated PNG)?

APNG is an extension of PNG that supports animation — similar to GIF but with full 24-bit color and alpha transparency (GIF is limited to 256 colors). APNG is supported by all modern browsers (Chrome 59+, Firefox 3+, Safari 8+, Edge 79+). It's commonly used for animated stickers, loading indicators, and UI animations where GIF quality is insufficient.

What is an interlaced PNG?

Interlaced PNGs (using Adam7 interlacing) load progressively — showing a blurry preview first that sharpens as data arrives. Non-interlaced PNGs load top-to-bottom. Interlacing increases file size by ~5-10% but improves perceived loading speed on slow connections. Most image editors offer interlacing as a save option.

Why are PNG files larger than JPG?

PNG uses lossless compression (DEFLATE) — no image data is discarded. JPG uses lossy compression — it permanently removes detail for smaller files. For photographs, JPG is 5–10x smaller. For graphics with flat colors, text, or transparency, PNG can be smaller. For the best of both worlds, use WebP or AVIF which offer lossy+lossless+transparency.
